RELICS a transient dataset, Zürich

Nightnurse Images GmbH, 18.X00

Looking into the office server of nightnurse images, one finds a folder named "testrender", a digital dumpster containing virtual models of imagined enviroments. The data contained in each file describes the precise arrangement of objects, mathematical calculations of lights, properties of materials and many more layers of information that constitute the content necessary to create a convincing visual representation of commissioned projects. As files pile up, the amount of data gets bigger, cheap and disposable as it may be, takes up space, clogs up data channels and must thus be maintained and cleaned up on a regular basis.

Relics is based on a small set salvaged from this temporary storage. The models - built and used for architectural projects earlier this year - are discarded by-products of an all digital production process. Taken out of context and stripped of their charactersitic materials, the projects are cast in homogeneity, questioning the way architecture is visually represented on many platforms from local competitions to entertainment industry.

The same data is used to produce the five images, by re-articulating and combining differnet elements in the digital image production process, from multi-dimensional coordinate data to color and pixel values. The following set of digital operations were performed on the data:

Relics (shadow / light), Relics (windosw/walls/floors), Relics (lexicographical order), Relics (point clouds), Relics (sorted maps).
